Art Challenge - Thursday 2nd July (MC Esher)

Hi year 4,
Following on from our lesson last week on optical illusions, I would like to look at the work of M.C. Esher.

MC Esher was a Dutch graphic artist who produced much of his artwork in the 1920s and 1930s. He was very much interested in patterns and optical illusions.

Here are some examples of his work:




Esher is most famous for his impossible pictures. Look at this one called Waterfall. It is very hard to see where the picture starts and ends.


Esher's work has inspired lots of people. The puzzle game Monument Valley is based on his ideas:


Activity - Can you create your own Esher style picture? You could either:

1. Have a go at replicating some of these simple impossible picture ideas:



2. Create your own Esher style impossible picture.
