Poetry challenge - Friday 1st May

Poetry challenge - Friday 1st May

To finish the week we'd like you to get your creative heads on  and write a poem about what you have been doing whilst we have been off from school.

You can write any type of poem. and don't worry about making it rhyme.

We would love you to email your poems for us to look at and dojos are available for all poems sent.

To give you some ideas, here's one I wrote:

Nine o'clock and it's PE with Joe,

It's motivating and gets me ready to go.

Then there are emails to check and reports to write,

Is it lunch time yet? Not quite.Sort out some work for year 4 to do,

What's for tomorrow? I haven't a clue.

Home schooling with my youngest - maths, physics, English,

He's not very keen, can't wait to finish.

If I've finished my work, it's a walk round the lake,

But when I get back, my legs really ache.

A special treat this week, a staff meeting on Zoom,

It seemed really strange seeing everyone one from my own dining room.

I've done lots of jobs in the time so far,

I've cleaned the patio and washed the car.

The grass is cut and fresh paint is on the wall,

I hope we're back soon because I'm missing you all!

Don't forget to email your poems!

English Challenge - Thursday 30th April

English Challenge - Thursday 30th April

Hello everyone,

Today we are going to do some descriptive writing.

You will need to remind yourself about things you have learnt at school earlier in the year and at home over the last few weeks such as expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials.

You will also need to think about different sentence types to make your writing interesting.

Don't forget punctuation!

For each of these pictures do a piece of descriptive writing. Try to use ambitious and interesting vocabulary. Use all of your senses. What can you see, hear, smell, feel.

It would be great to see some of your work.

Homophones

Hello everyone,
Today we are going to revise homophones.

These can cause us a lot of problems in our writing, especially if we use the wrong one!

Remember homophones are words that sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings, for example hole and whole.

To begin with can you try to list as many pairs of homophones as you can think of. Two minutes!

Now copy the sentences below and choose the correct homophone to complete each.

1. She bought a beautiful new gown _____ (for/four) the dance.

2. The chocolate bar was _____ (hear/here) on the table a minute ago.

3. The players walked out on to the tennis _____ (court.caught) to play in the final.

4. Look _____ (threw/through) the window and the beautiful sunset.

5. I'm not sure whether that is a rabbit or a _____(hare/hair).

6. As I am a vegetarian, I don't eat _____ (meet/meat)

7. I don;t really _____ (no/know) what to do.

8. At Easter, I _____ (ate/eight) a _____(hole/whole) Easter egg.

Now can you write a sentence using each of these homophones to show their correct meanings.

1. write and right

2. where and wear

3. choose and chews

4. find and fined

5. allowed and aloud

Hello everyone,

Today for our English challenge, we are going to look at pronouns.

Follow the link below to watch a short video explaining pronouns.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0avnWqGxd7g

Now have a go at the tasks below.

Which of the words below are pronouns?

Copy these sentences and underline the noun and circle or highlight the pronoun that it has been replaced with.

1.  Kian dislikes anything to do with music almost as much as he dislikes running in PE.

2. "Nice picture, Leah," said Sophie, sticking her head round the door.

3. Josh tried to balance the cap on his head.

4. I put my hands over my face to stop it twitching.

5. All of the children decided that they wanted extra golden time.

Now can you rewrite this short passage changing some of the nouns to pronouns so that it sounds better?

Billy was feeling nervous. Billy was feeling so nervous, Billy found even tying Billy's shoelaces difficult. Billy's best friend, Harry, was worried about Billy.

French challenge

 French Challenge

This week we thought we could do some French as it is a while since we last did any.

We are focusing on 'Dans ma ville' which means in my town. Look at the different buildings and places on the sheet and decide whether there any of these in your town.

Put each building or place in a sentence using the sentence openers at the bottom of the sheet.

Dans ma ville il y a ... means In my town there is...

Dans ma ville il n'y a pas ... means In my town there is not ...

Check whether the buildings are masculine (un) or feminine (une).

If you are unsure about the buildings or places, Google translate will help.

Good luck.

English Challenge - Friday 24th April

Hi year 4,

For our final grammar lesson this week we will look at PREPOSITIONS. You should remember these for looking at openers. The P in ISPACE stands for prepositions. If you have forgotten however:

So prepositions are words that describe positions and relationships of nouns.

Task 1 - Make a list of as many prepositions as you can.

Once you have completed your list check here to see if you have most of these:

Prepositions

Task 2 - Complete the sentences below using the picture clues.

Challenge - Write 3 interesting sentences of your own using a preposition in each!

Friday 24th April - Maths Challenge (Problem Solving)

Good morning year 4,

For our final lesson this week we will look at some problem solving questions which might use any of the 4 operations we have practised this week. For our warm-up we will check to see if we can remember how to solve calculations using the methods we have practised this week.

Try these calculations:

3543 + 4567
4324 - 2595
94 x 4
675 divided by 5

As usual, check with a calculator.

Here are your problem solving questions. Remember the tips we use in class to help us solve these problems:

* Read the questions carefully, more than once if necessary.
* Highlight or identify the key information in the question (words or numbers).
* Choose the calculation you will use to solve the problem.
* Remember to show your working out or method.

Good luck, here are the problems:

English Challenge - Thursday 23rd April

Hello year 4,

Today we are going to look as another important word type - Nouns.

Nouns are naming words, which usually name a person, place or thing. If you have forgotten here's a quick reminder:

For the following activity draw a table in your challenge book. Sort the nouns into common and proper. Remember the capital letters are a clue that a noun is a proper noun.

Challenge

You have 1 minute to write down as many nouns as you can for the following headings. They can be common or proper nouns.

Vehicles - 1 minute
e.g bus, car etc

Technology - 1 minute
e.g. computer

Locations 1 minute
e.g. Edlington, park etc

Thursday 23rd April - Maths Challenge (Division)

Good morning!

We have one last operation to look at this week - Division. We will be using the 'Bus Stop' method you have practiced in class. Before we do this we will warm-up with some division with remainders calculations:

Now let's have a look at the bus stop. Here's a video reminder:

Now it's your turn to have a go:

Because these calculations shouldn't have a remainder you can check them on the calculator.

To finish try this problem:

Music Challenge - Week 5

Hi all,

As the weather is nice and we are well into Spring I would like you to listen to these three pieces of music about Spring.

I would like you to write a little bit about each piece:

1. Do you like the music?
2. What do you like about the music?
3. Is the music a good representation of Spring? Why?

Vivaldi - Spring

The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun

The Beach Boys - Spring Vacation

Challenge -  Can you play Vivaldi?

Here's a simplified piano version of the Vivaldi melody. I would just concentrate on the right hand part unless you play the piano. If you don't have a piano/keyboard there are some free apps on iTunes and Google Play or a Flash Keyboard here:

Piano

Good Luck!

Wednesday 22nd April - Maths Challenge (Written Multiplication)

Tuesday 21st April - English Challenge (Grammar)

This week as part of our English challenges we will be focus on grammar. Grammar is the idea that when we speak or write we follow the correct rules for choosing and ordering the words.

One rule that is commonly followed incorrectly is the use of - was, were, is and are in sentences.

Here's a good video explaining how and when to use was and were correctly.

So to summarise the rule is:

We use was when we are referring to one thing in the sentence.
We use were when referring to more than one thing. (Plural)

The exception is when we are speaking or writing about the noun 'you' as this can be either singular or plural - We ALWAYS use were. For example - You were missing about Julia!

Copy and complete these sentence into your challenge book. Take care to choose the correct verb!

Maths Challenge - Tuesday 21st April (Written Subraction)

Good morning year,

Before we continue our revision of the written methods this week, here is your warm up.

Missing Multiplication Squares - Find the Missing numbers

For these multiplication squares you have to think about which times tables all of the numbers in a row belong to.

For example the 1st square has a 10, 5 and 30 going across. These all belong to the 5 times table, so the missing number must be 5. Have a go at finding the other missing numbers.

Written Subtraction

Watch the following subtraction video as a reminder of how to complete written subtraction. This is exactly how we have been practising it in class.

Now try these calculations yourself:

342 - 56
453 - 246
543 - 329
577 - 398
3453 - 1567
£43.54 - £17.65

Remember to check your answers with a calculator!

Science Challenge Week 5 - Animal Classifications Part 2

Hi!

Last time we looked at how animals can be classified between vertebrates and invertebrates. If you missed that challenge look back at the week 4 challenge before this one.

Another way of sorting animals into groups is by determining which class of animals they are. You have probably heard of some of these classification names before. Here's a video to help:

Task -

Draw and label 3 different animals from different classes. Label them with some of their key features. You could choose -

An eagle - bird
A whale - mammal
A frog - amphibian

or another other animals from the insect, reptile, fish, arachnid or mollusc groups.

Your diagrams might look something like this:

English Challenge - Monday 20th April (Reading Comprehension)

Hello year 4,
If you are just joining us back after the Easter holidays, welcome back!

For our reading comprehension this week I have chosen an extract from the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Whisper read the extract below to yourself carefully. (Click on the image if it's too small to read)

Now answer the following questions about the text:

1. What woke Frank up in the middle of the night?
2. What did frank think was going on in the Riddle house?
3. Why wouldn't Frank have phoned the police, even if he had a telephone?
4. Where did he pick his walking stick up from?
5. True or false - Frank listens to a conversation between Harry and Wormtail?
6. What was Frank's plan after listening to the conversation?
7. What happens to Frank at the end of the text? Explain in as much detail as you can.
8. Do you think this is a good opening chapter to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire? Explain why.

Monday 20th April - Maths Challenge

Hello year 4,

If you are just joining us back after the Easter holidays, welcome back. I thought it would be a good idea to revise our written calculations strategies for the 4 operations this week. Mainly because we have been missing out on our arithmetic lessons.

Today we will look at ADDITION

Here are some addition calculations to complete mentally as a warm-up.

1.   23 + 24
2.   26 + 35
3.   37 + 19
4.   56 + 35
5.   67 + 43

So here is a video reminder of how to complete a column addition calculation with exchanges, just like we have practised in class (It says year 3, but it's suitable for year 4):

Try the method now with these calculations:

34 + 67
234 + 266
357 + 316
414 + 287
1532 + 1289
£24.37 + £53.56

Review - Check your answers using a calculator. Most phones and Windows PCs have a built in calculator!

English Challenge - Friday 17th April (Descriptive Writing)

Hello year 4,

For our final descriptive writing challenge I would like you to put everything we have practised together and write a paragraph or two of descriptive writing.

The title will be - The Forest

Here are the writing skills we have practised:

1. Expanded noun phrases
2. Similes
3. Different openers (ISPACE)
4. Using our senses in our writing
5. Using a thesaurus to improve our vocabulary

Here are some pictures to inspire your ideas:

If you are still struggling to get started here are a couple of sentences you can use as a start.

The Forest

Inside the lush green forest I hear the sounds of squirrels scampering rapidly through the trees. The floor is littered with the split and broken shell of nuts and acorns.

Maths Challenge - Friday 17th April (Fractions and decimal problem solving)

For our final look at fractions this week we will look at problem solving involving fractions and decimals.

Try warming up with these fraction questions. Remember that when we write a whole number as a fraction it always has the same numerator and denominator. For example:

Here are your problem solving questions. Remember these tips:

* Read the question carefully.
* Show any calculations or working out.

Now try this decimal problem. Remember to explain your reasoning.
