English Challenge - Thurday 2nd April

Good morning year 4,

Let's continue our look at punctuation today by looking at speech marks (also known as inverted commas). We have practised using them a lot this term!

Using this piece of direct speech, write down the rules for punctuating speech to remind yourself of them:

"Toothless! Come here!" yelled Hiccup loudly.
"I'm hungry," moaned Toothless.

Have a go at writing these characters as direct speech using speech marks. Feel free to make up the character names.

When you are writing speech it is important not to use said too often. Instead use:

asked

replied 

exclaimed

shouted

whispered

whimpered

A common tip is to think SAID IS DEAD!
